Château de Lantheuil, a castle in Normandy, France, is the setting for Forget Me Not, a solo exhibition by Chinese artist Xu Yang, curated by Lucy von Goetz. in Shandong, China in 1996 and now based in London, Xu Yang has built her own visual language through a combination of Rococo art and traditional Chinese iconography.
The title of the exhibition refers to themes that run through the artist's work, symbolising memory and identity. Gold-embellished porcelain, ceramic dumplings, and portraits in pink wigs dressed in Chinese mask patterns intersect with traces of the past and personal narratives; the viewer is immersed in a multi-layered landscape of memory that blends Eastern and Western cultures, drawing out personal emotions.
‘I think the real heritage is in the little things that everyone forgets about,’ says the artist, ‘The dumplings my aunt made, the gold-trimmed picture frames, and every single flower petal are all trajectories of memory for me.’ The young Asian artist's exhibition in a 17th-century castle is a sensuous attempt to renew tradition, as the present gazes into the past.
This unique exhibition runs until 10 July, with guided tours of the castle, including the exhibition, taking place three times a day.
